Cardinal Cushing School
Admissions

Cardinal Cushing School works closely with families to make the admissions process as easy as possible. Because the school has a rolling admissions policy, we can accept students at any time during the calendar year. Cardinal Cushing School has been SEVIS approved and therefore can accept international students.

While reading about our school will give parents and guardians a good description of our programs, there is no substitute for actually visiting the beautiful campus and seeing our school in action. Therefore, we strongly encourage parents, guardians, school districts, and agencies who are seeking a new school for a child to schedule a tour of the Cardinal Cushing School. By doing this, we can thoroughly demonstrate the programs and services offered by our organization and more accurately ascertain our ability to develop an individualized program for your child.

Cardinal Cushing School serves a diverse population of students from as young as 6 years old through the age of 22. Almost all of our students have some developmental or intellectual delays covering the full spectrum of functioning levels. Many of our students also have secondary conditions including behavioral, emotional, and mental health concerns.

Referrals can be made by parents/guardians or by the appropriate school district or state agency. The more complete a referral packet is, the quicker the admissions proccess is likely to go. Referral packets should include a current IEP, any available testing (psychological and educational), ancillary services reports (e.g., Speech, OT, PT, etc.), medical information, behavioral data, and other recent materials.

Cardinal Cushing School makes a deliberate effort to give sincere consideration to each and every referral we receive. Unless it is clear from the referral packet that Cushing does not have programs to meet the child's needs (e.g., student is a fire setter) everyone will be offered an interview. The Board of Admissions who makes the final decision on admitting students, meets twice per week to review referrals and make recommendations for further action. Following the initial review, an interview is scheduled, followed by an onsite evaluation if the student continues to be an appropriate candidate. This evaluation gives the student an opportunity to experience our school first-hand, while giving our staff an opportunity to evaluate which programs are best suited to meet the students educational and other needs.

Cushing makes an effort to adapt our programs to meet each student's individual needs. If you believe Cushing is the right school for your child, we look forward to meeting you and working with you to make it happen.
