Three local business owners and four local high school seniors were recognized during the dinner for outstanding achievement and service in their community.
While glasses clinked and the chatter subdued, the first round of awards began with three out of the four high school seniors present to receive their $1,000 chamber scholarship for academics and community service. Each student stood out among the dozens of entries with their involvement in sports, extracurricular avtivities and volunteer opportunities. For example, Andrew D. Bridson, who is heading to Cornell University, helps coach a youth soccer team. Amanda J. Schmitt, attending Colby College in the fall, dedicates her time to the International Cultural Association. Kate LaRose was the other scholarship recipient present at the dinner.
Tom Perruna, owner of Outback Steakhouse for eight years, modestly stepped up to the podium next to receive the chamber’s Outstanding Community Service Award. Perruna was recognized for his selfless giving to groups like the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, sponsoring local Little League and hosting gratuitous teacher appreciation dinners.
After meeting Father Chris of St. Mary’s, Perruna said he got involved with the church’s teen center, donating food to their events as well. Perruna said his greatest pride, though, is that his staff is so eager to help in his efforts.
"My staff is always willing to volunteer," he said. "We are like a family."
