A view of this property
by the casual observer would give no hint that Cushing Residence
is a HUD (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development) sponsored
apartment complex. The three-story brick and clapboard buildings
are nestled on over four acres of lush lawns, with flowering trees,
tall pines, and flower beds filled to overflowing from spring through
fall. Illustrative of the superior housing offered at Cushing Residence
is the extensive waiting list for apartments at the site. The complex
is located adjacent to the campus of the Cardinal Cushing Center
at Hanover and provides one and two-bedroom apartments to qualifying
senior citizens and individuals with disabilities.
Cushing Residence is
much more than an apartment complex. It is also the home to some
of the most innovative programming in HUD sponsored developments.
Symbolic of the pioneering spirit of Cardinal Cushing Centers, Cushing
Residence was one of the first HUD properties to offer a Supportive
Living Program. The goal of the Supportive Living Program is to
assist residents to age in place. A comprehensive
meal program and the services of the Visiting Nurse Association
are integral components of the program, which enable
senior citizens to reside safely in their apartments rather than face the
daunting challenge of moving to a nursing home environment.
Cushing Residence is
also home to another state of the art program, and one of the
first in the state, the Cushing Computer
Learning Center. In this high-tech, computer classroom, residents
are provided with instruction on a variety of computer applications
including Internet navigation, email correspondence, introductory
desktop publishing, and many Microsoft Office applications. This
program strives to reduce the isolation felt by many senior citizens
by providing them with both a new and efficient method of communication
as well as exposing them to the wide array of experiences offered
on the Internet.
Also unique to
Cushing Residence is our Community Living Program in which
our Community Living Counselors provide activities and
services for our younger, disabled residents. The
weekend and evening hours provide our disabled population
with such activities as bowling, group dinners, coffee
houses, movie nights and game nights as well as assistance
with living in an independent, communal setting.
Cushing Residence has won industry awards because of the
success of this program and the harmonious living that
exists between our seniors and our younger disabled
residents.
In addition to these
unique services, Cushing Residence also offers much of the same
programming found at traditional HUD developments. A full-time
Resident Service Coordinator assists residents with many of the daily problems
they encounter as they age. Recreational and social programming regularly
occurs to assist residents to broaden their circle of friends and
promote interaction. To learn more about Cushing Residence, please
