HANOVER – The Board of Directors of St. Coletta & Cardinal Cushing Schools of Massachusetts is pleased to announce the appointment of Jo Ann Simons as president and chief executive officer of the organization effective August 11.

Simons has been executive director of the Arc of East Middlesex (EMARC) since 1993.  She was formerly deputy superintendent of Fernald State School, director of policy for the Massachusetts Department of Mental Retardation, president of the National Down Syndrome Congress and Special Olympics International board member.  She is currently vice-chair of the National Down Syndrome Society.

“Jo Ann has a history of building programs that foster a child’s transition to maximum independence in adulthood,” said John Boucher, board chair and President  & CEO of South Shore Savings Bank.  “She has had substantial success in engaging the community in a student’s journey as well.  We’re very pleased to bring this potential to Cardinal Cushing Centers.”

“I am very excited about the diversity of students, supports, and highly qualified personnel that comprise St. Coletta & Cardinal Cushing Schools,” said Simons.  “The organization has an unmatched reputation in the industry because of its Franciscan values and dedication to maximizing the potential of the students and the adults it serves.  I am honored to have the opportunity to work together with the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi, the Board of Directors, our generous donors and committed staff to continue to expand the opportunities for children and adults with developmental disabilities.”

Simons hold a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wheaton College of Massachusetts and Masters in Social Work from the University of Connecticut.  She is a frequent national and international speaker to professional and family groups on the topics of intellectual disabilities, housing and transition. She is a chapter author of “Babies with Down Syndrome-3rd edition”, published by Woodbine House. Her book, “The Transition from School to Adult Life”, will be released by Woodbine House next year.  She lives in Swampscott and she and her husband, Chet Derr, have two adult children. Jonathan, who has Down syndrome, has been the inspiration for her career.
