HANOVER
– The Board of Directors of St. Coletta & Cardinal Cushing Schools
of Massachusetts is pleased to announce the appointment of Jo Ann
Simons as president and chief executive officer of the organization
effective August 11.
Simons has
been executive director of the Arc of East Middlesex (EMARC)
since 1993. She was formerly deputy superintendent of Fernald
State School, director of policy for the Massachusetts
Department of Mental Retardation, president of the National Down
Syndrome Congress and Special Olympics International board
member. She is currently vice-chair of the National Down
Syndrome Society.
“Jo Ann has a
history of building programs that foster a child’s transition to
maximum independence in adulthood,” said John Boucher, board
chair and President & CEO of South Shore Savings Bank. “She
has had substantial success in engaging the community in a
student’s journey as well. We’re very pleased to bring this
potential to Cardinal Cushing Centers.”

Simons hold a
Bachelor of Arts degree from Wheaton College of Massachusetts
and Masters in Social Work from the University of Connecticut.
She is a frequent national and international speaker to
professional and family groups on the topics of intellectual
disabilities, housing and transition. She is a chapter author of
“Babies with Down Syndrome-3rd edition”, published by
Woodbine House. Her book, “The Transition from School to Adult
Life”, will be released by Woodbine House next year. She lives
in Swampscott and she and her husband, Chet Derr, have two adult
children. Jonathan, who has Down syndrome, has been the
inspiration for her career.
St. Coletta & Cardinal Cushing Schools of
