The forty-first annual Springtime Gala raised over $1 million to benefit students and adults of Cardinal Cushing Centers, Inc. The fundraising event, held Saturday evening, April 16th , at the World Trade Center, Boston, was a collaborative effort of manufacturers, retailers and community leaders.
"We were honored to pay tribute to two professionals who have achieved outstanding success in both their careers and their philanthropic pursuits," said past Honoree Ted English, President and CEO of The TJX Companies, who served as Co-Chair of the event with Mike Wedge, President and CEO of BJ's Wholesale Club, Inc. "Kerry Hamilton and James McDonough have exhibited their compassion and long-term support of Cushing Centers' students through the exceptional fundraising endeavors they have created while inspiring others to partake in meaningful ways," said English.
These fundraising endeavors have resulted in numerous, major capital improvements and program enhancements. For instance the former Abington Savings Bank employees raised the funds to build a new recreation center and outdoor activity pool, renovate the student dining room, and fund an annual "trip of a lifetime" to Disney World for graduates. The team at BJ's Wholesale Club has raised funds to augment programs in numerous areas, including the construction of a two-unit, twelve-bedroom home for residential students, and support for programs in academic, vocational and therapeutic areas for some twenty years. "None of which would have been possible without the leadership of our honorees and the support they garnered from their associates at BJ's and Abington Savings Bank," said Paul J. Hudson, President and CEO of St. Coletta and Cardinal Cushing Schools.
Over the years, Springtime, brainchild of benefactor Leonard Florence, President of the Leonard Florence group, in 1964, has earned the reputation of one of Boston's premiere fundraisers and cumulatively has raised $20 million on behalf of the students of all faiths with special needs educated at Cardinal Cushing Centers in Braintree and Hanover, Massachusetts.
"This year was no exception. The audience of 650 supporters participated enthusiastically in the Silent and Live Auctions to contribute to the night's resounding success," said Hudson. Auction items were donated by the FleetCenter, Boston Bruins, the Jacobs Family, Delaware North Companies, The TJX Companies, Boston Red Sox, Waterford Wedgwood and the Zildjian Company.
In addition to the two Humanitarian of the Year Awards, The Cardinal Cushing Community Service Award was presented to Charlie Jacobs of the Boston Bruins and FleetCenter. Jacobs has been responsible for an annual Holiday Party at the FleetCenter, has donated the highest quality weight training and cardiovascular equipment and has made numerous contributions to many fundraising events.
